The "Found Animals Forum" brings various leaders in animal welfare and their perspectives to our Los Angeles animal welfare community. Based on input from participants at the inaugural Forum in February, Spay/Neuter has been selected as the subject of the next Found Animals Forum taking place on November 6, 2010 at the Skirball Cultural Center. The goal of The Found Animals Forum: Spay/Neuter Past, Present, and Future is to provide the Los Angeles community with information and resources through a constructive, collaborative community building event.
Spay/Neuter is a crucial tool in the fight to eliminate shelter euthanasia as accidental and unwanted litters contribute to stray and feral populations and crowd the shelter system. While surgical spay/neuter has been widely available for decades, best practices in the field continue to evolve. Over the past five years, the Los Angeles area has seen dramatic changes in the spay/neuter landscape. Did you know that. . .
-
FixNation will serve over 17,000 cats in 2010
-
Clinico now has three fulltime clinics operating and plans to sterilize over 30,000 animals in 2011
-
There are now three full time mobile units serving the Los Angeles metro area
Clearly, the community has more affordable spay/neuter resources available than ever before and new opportunities to use this key strategy to benefit the pets and people of Los Angeles.
The Found Animals Forum: Spay/Neuter Past, Present, and Future presentations will include:
The Evolution of Spay/Neuter in Los Angeles, presented by Dr. Marvin Mackie
The Los Angeles Spay/Neuter Landscape – highlighting the wealth of affordable spay/neuter resources now available in the LA Metro Area. Presented by the Found Animals Foundation
Messaging Spay/Neuter: Lessons from the Gulf Coast Spay/Neuter Campaign - featuring the results of a two year study to understand what approaches are most effective to motivate people to spay and neuter their pets. Presented by the Humane Society of the United States
Targeted Spay/Neuter Programs: A Grantmaker’s Perspective - examining PetSmart Charities’ transition to a targeted spay/neuter grants program and how to compete effectively for funding. Presented by PetSmart Charities
Targeted Spay/Neuter Programs: A Provider’s Perspective - The successful implementation of targeted spay/neuter programs in Jacksonville, Florida. Presented by Rick Ducharme, of First Coast No More Homeless Pets
Spay/Neuter Funding: How Much Does This Cost and How Do We Pay For It? – discussing the high cost of low cost spay/neuter and how public and private funding are essential to keeping clinics open. Presented by The Found Animals Foundation
A Panel of Los Angeles Experts: including representatives from the Amanda Foundation, the CA Spay Neuter License Plate, Clinico, Downtown Dog, FixNation, and Los Angeles Animal Services.
Networking reception featuring free food and an open bar (beer and wine only) will follow presentations.
